On the evening of the 29/30 Jan 1943, the two small Corvettes HMNZS Kiwi and Moa, worked together to ram and destroy a large and heavily-armed Japanese Submarine, just of Guadalcanar.
These Corvettes were used as minesweepers, and it was the Kiwi that rammed the Sub 3 times.

William (Bill) Steele Recieved a Letter of Commendation, from the United States Commander of the South Pacific Area in the name of the President of the US.
The advice was recieved by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) 3 March 1943
