  	According to the dairy of his commanding officer, Lieutenant Westmacott, Thomas Gillanders was put in charge of approximately 14 men as they formed a line to hold Baby 700 in the early afternoon of 15 April. The Anzac position on Baby 700 was overrun that afternoon. Westmacott later wrote in his diary, "Corporal Gillanders, modest and brave, was shot through the head whilst passing an order. Young Jack Petersen took over the section and was killed, too." "Dairy of Lieutenant Westmacott, 16th Waikato company"
