- Obituary
William Elliott
Another old identity has passed to his long home suddenly in the well known person of William Elliott of Nevis. Deceased who was a strong hale man for his years of 63 has been bringing up sheep from Southland and to gain time crossed them over the river. This necessitated his crossing also the result being a wetting which caused an inflammation which set in ultimately ending in death.
Mr Elliott who came to Mr Cowan's station some 16 years ago was a sturdy specimen of border Scot, a native of Hockholm (sic) of Liddisdale Roxburghshire.
About six years ago he left his employment of Kawarau Station and located himself and his family at Nevis where he kept a hotel and general store. His interest in public affairs still continued and to him in a great measure are the Nevis people still indebted for obtaining a road through from their township to Garston.
Deceased leaves a grown up family and wife to mourn his loss and their grief will be shared by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
The funeral to the new cemetery which was largely followed took place on Saturday. The officiating clergyman was Mr White.
