After Robert Elliot died, Helen his widow did not know what to do to secure the farm and sent William to 'Ballantyne of the Shaws' to ask for advice. Ballantyne told William to bring the deeds of the farm one day and come back the next day to claim the farm in his own name. This was done. but in the meatime Ballantyne registered the farm in his own name and then threw the Elliots out of Toftholm.
It is said that Roberts Widow put a curse on Ballantyne - The Widows Curse.
