  	Mr R M Nichol Mr Robert Millar Nichol, a well-known stud stock representative in South Canterbury in the 1960s and early 1970s, died at Amberley on Monday. He was 63. Mr Nichol was a regular caller on district stud sheep and cattle breeders and was often involved in the shipment of live breeding stock through the Port of Timaru. First resident stud stock officer for Dalgety NZ Ltd in the region, he was regarded as a competent judge of sheep and cattle and as a good organiser. One farmer described Mr Nichol as a "tireless worker" who won the respect of stud stock breeders. An employer said Mr Nichol was a competent, conscientious and friendly man who imparted a dignity to his work. Born in Dunedin in 1917 and educated at Palmerston District High School, Mr Nichol was employed as a shepherd on Kiatoa Station in the Palmerston area. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was posted to Britain where he saw active service as a wireless-air gunner in Coastal Command with Nos 52, 293 and 484 Squadrons. He also served in the Mediterranean theatre based on Malta and in 1942 was injured in an air crash over the island. He rose to the rank of flying officer. He returned to New Zealand in 1945 and was employed as a fat lamb buyer for Simms Cooper at Pahiatua until 1953 when he went to Wanganui and was a stock agent for Levin and Co. for a number of years. He also managed a farm and was again a stock agent at Waipukurau for Deplichet and McLeod. He joined Dalgety NZ Ltd in Christchurch in 1965 as a stud stock representative and soon after transferred to Timaru where he was based until 1972 when he resigned. A keen rugby player, Mr Nichol was later a referee and he controlled a number of provincial represenative matches in the Wairarapa. He was a keen golfer playing in Wanganui and Timaru where he was a member of the Timaru Club. Mr Nichol was a foundation member and president of the Wanganui Brevet Club and a member of the Scottish Masonic Lodge in Wanganui. He was a member of the South Canterbury RSA. He is survived by his wife and a son and daughter, Robert, Christchurch, and Phillipa, Timaru (Mrs P J Hogg)
